The Central YMCA has been an important part of the Tenderloin community since 1910. We are active in numerous community organizations and coalitions including the Tenderloin Community on Patrol, the Lower Eddy Planning Coalition, Adopt-a-Block, and the Tenderloin Network, to name a few. We are doing our part in the community by working with other organizations in cleanup, safety, and improvement projects. We also serve as a central meeting and gathering space for Tenderloin residents and groups.

We share our building with a number of other non-profits whose missions are similar to ours. These include:

  • Delancey Street Foundation
  • Continuum
  • Wu Yee Childcare
  • Tenderloin Youth Advocates
  • Coalition to Abolish Poverty
  • California/Nevada Interfaith Council for Corporate Responsibility
  • Bay Area Youth Agency Consortium
  • In addition to these permanent residents, a number of groups use our space on an ongoing basis. Some of these groups include:

  • Alcoholics Anonymous
  • Celebration International
  • Weight Watchers
  • Free Spirit
  • Violence Prevention Network

One of the Central YMCA's most unique programs is the Literacy School, a community service designed to help immigrants from several countries with few or no literacy skills begin the journey to the understanding of English, oral communication, and participation in the San Francisco communities. Since 1980, over 2,000 have participated in the program and over 60% of these have gone on to higher level English classes or employment. Check out our new Bulletin Board for the Literacy School offerings and schedule of classes.
